Tampere University Joins the OpenTitan Coalition to Advance Secure Open-Source Silicon

Tampere University has joined the OpenTitan Coalition as an academic partner, contributing its expertise in hardware security, RISC-V architecture, and cryptographic acceleration to the development of secure, commercial-grade open-source silicon. The partnership will help bridge cutting-edge academic research and real-world chip design, accelerating the path from innovation to deployment.

OpenTitan is the world’s first open-source silicon Root of Trust project, developed through collaboration between leading technology companies and research organizations. By joining the coalition, Tampere University strengthens OpenTitan’s research capabilities in embedded security, post-quantum cryptography, and RISC-V-based secure computing technologies.

Markku-Juhani Saarinen, Professor of Practice at Tampere University, says the partnership creates new opportunities to translate advanced research into practical security solutions.

“OpenTitan offers a unique opportunity to bring the latest research directly into secure, open, and production-ready silicon. The combination of the open RISC-V architecture and modern cryptography provides a strong foundation for the next generation of trustworthy computing systems,” Saarinen says.

Saarinen also serves as Chair of the Cryptography Special Interest Group (SIG) and the Post-Quantum Cryptography Task Group at RISC-V International.

He has already contributed to OpenTitan’s security efforts through advisory work on post-quantum cryptography hardening and implementation security. His involvement reflects the growing importance of resilient cryptographic hardware as a foundation for future trusted computing platforms.

According to Tampere University, the partnership will provide students and researchers with opportunities to contribute to globally significant open-source silicon technologies while strengthening collaboration between academia and industry. The initiative is also expected to accelerate the transfer of research outcomes into practical industrial applications.
